Before trails information is submitted, it is important to develop a common language of trails
terminology to insure collection of the most current and consistent information.
- EXISTING TRAIL: A trail (paved, unpaved, or water) for hiking, biking, equestrian, paddling, motorized, or multiple uses,
that is open to the public. This does not include in-road bike lanes or sidewalks.
*We are now collecting data on motorized trails.
- EXISTING TRAILHEAD: A trail access point open to the public with a minimum of designated parking.
A trail can have multiple trailheads.
- TRAIL SEGMENT: An entire trail or portion thereof whose characteristics are consistent. For example,
every segment will have the same surface for its entire length. Or every segment will have the
same allowed trail uses for its entire length.
